  1. Having worked for a medical device manufacturer, specifically providing professional services related to 3rd party integration, I can tell you that vendors are particularly sensitive to providing their API for the world to view. Why? Because it exposes them to unnecessary support issues that will ultimately come back to haunt them when a valued customer runs into a problem and expects the vendor to fix it. They simply don’t have the budgets or bandwidth to provide help desk support. This may not be the case for the Googles and SF.coms of the world, because this has always been at the heart of their business models. They depend on this functionality to generate interest and revenue. Your point is well taken, but until the manufacturers evolve their business models to accommodate the era of interoperability, there will continue to be resistance in my opinion.

  2. Phillip,

I totally agree, “until the manufacturers evolve their business models to accommodate the era of interoperability, there will continue to be resistance.” Technology is not the obstacle.
